I signed up this thing called the International Friends Program during one of my first days at school. Eventually they paired me with a guy named Stephen Hamidu.
Stephen is from Nigeria. This is his first time being to the western hemisphere. What makes this guy so remarkable is that he is living here for the next 2 years while his wife and 4 kids are back in Nigeria. That's just the start of what makes Stephen an incredible guy.
He is in the Master of Theology program and his topic is environmental responsibility in west Africa. Stephen says that the Christians in Africa (and I'm afraid this is true of ones in North America) just focus on how they are redeemed and don't work towards the redemption of creation. Stephen says that in Nigeria people kill animals without giving a thought to how rare the animals are or how they are affecting the ecosystem. Stephen is from southeastern Nigeria (near the border with Cameroon) where chimpanzees and gorillas are threatened with extinction.
One of the problems he has had in his research is finding sources that deal specifically with environmentalism in Africa. If you come across any let me know so we can all help Stephen in his studies!
